1972 The 403-member Constituent Assembly passed the Constitution of Bangladesh pledging the young nation, within 10 months of her freedom, to the high ideals of Nationalism, Socialism, Democracy and Secularism. The passage of the 153 Article Constitution Bill in Bengali came at 1:15 in the early afternoon shortly after an hour-long speech by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

1975 The Constitution (Fourth Amendment) Act 1975 was passed with major changes like - the presidential form of government replaced the parliamentary system; a one-party system in place of a multi-party system was introduced; the powers of the Jatiya Sangsad were curtailed; the Judiciary lost much of its independence; the Supreme Court was deprived of its jurisdiction over the protection and enforcement of fundamental rights.

1989 The Constitution (Ninth Amendment) Act 1989 was passed which provided for the direct election of the vice-president; it restricted a person in holding the office of the PRESIDENT for two consecutive terms of five years each; it also provided that a vice-president might be appointed in case of a vacancy, but the appointment must be approved by the Jatiya Sangsad.
